Evenepoel est grand. Ou plutôt monumental. Ce dimanche, le jeune Belge a remporté Liège-Bastogne-Liège suite à un effort de presque 30km et ce dès sa première participation. Retour sur le fait d'armes du prodige de l'équipe Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl et le chemin qu'il a parcouru pour en arriver là.

Nous sommes en 2019. Remco Evenepoel commence à se faire un nom dans le peloton par ses exploits étincelants. Sur le site, on se demandait si pour lui, 2020 ne rimerait pas avec 20/20. Et notre cher protagoniste entamait la saison pied au plancher, s'imposant partout où il passait. En chiffre, neuf victoires et quatre courses par étapes en autant de participations. "Le petit cannibale" avait grand appétit et était impressionnant de puissance, dominateur sans partage, tout simplement monstrueux.

Jusqu'à ce 15 Août 2020 et cette terrible chute lors du tour de Lombardie. Brillant comme à son habitude, "le nouveau Merckx" est dans le groupe de tête...jusqu'à cette erreur de trajectoire dans la descente du mur de Sormano qui le projette contre le parapet et dans le ravin. Gravement blessé après cette chute dramatique même si le pire a été évité, sa saison prend fin.

Remco Evenepoel reprend alors la compétition presque un an plus tard, en Mai 2021, à l'occasion du Giro. Pour une première, le jeune prodige montre de belle choses, porte le maillot de meilleur jeune, occupe la deuxième place du classement général mais finit par craquer, d'abord à la régulière, puis par abandonne suite à une nouvelle chute et un état de fatigue général trop important après la 17ème étape. Une performance tout à fait honorable mais qui est perçue à tort par certains des suiveurs trop habitués à le voir banaliser l'extraordinaire comme un échec.

Lors du reste de la saison, il remporte tout de même le tour du Danemark, une médaille d'argent au championnat d'Europe, ainsi que des médailles de bronze en contre-la-montre aux championnats d'Europe et du monde.

Suite à cela, le Belge est alors quelque peu éclipsé par les performances d'un autre cannibale, Slovène celui-ci : Tadej Pogacar. Mais il aura suffi à ce que "Tamau Pogi" fasse l'impasse sur la Doyenne (pour raisons personnelles) pour qu'Evenepoel nous rappelle son talent par une nouvelle démonstration de force dans son style caractéristique.

En effet, Quick-Step était à la recherche de sa première victoire sur les classiques cette année. Julian Alaphilippe pris dans une chute tôt dans la course et contraint à l'abandon, la responsabilité de faire un résultat retombait sur les épaules du "petit cannibale", qui a sorti les crocs.

A 29kmde l'arrivée, au sommet de la côte de La Redoute, il s'est extirpé de son groupe par une fulgurante attaque d'une puissance inouïe (demandez donc à Nelson Powless, incapable de tenir le rythme dans la roue du phénomène ce qu'il en a pensé).
